Hungry for Home

by Gill Pringle

Liam Hemsworth is poised for greatness as his character Gale, takes centre stage in the penultimate
episode of the smash hit franchise starring Jennifer Lawrence, The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part One.

MEETING WITH MELBOURNE’S own Liam Hemsworth in a swanky Beverly Hills hotel, he passes on the gourmet fare, confessing that he’s listing some good old comfort food from Down Under.

“Fish and chips,Tim Tams,Vegemite toast . . .” he says listing off the creature comforts of home.

“I have some Vegemite over here, but it doesn’t taste the same; it tastes better in Australia. I’ve found a few places here that sell it. but it’s just not the same so I usually get friends to bring it over.”

After catching his first break seven years ago with the recurring role of Josh Taylor in Neighbors and then as Marcus in The Elephant Princess, he struck Hollywood gold four years ago, starring in romantic weepie The Last Song where he would famously fall for his leading lady Miley Cyrus.

Currently single, he looks every inch the movie star when we meet, despite efforts to downplay his good looks beneath shaggy hair and scruffy beard. At heart, he still feels like a surfer dude from Australia though.

“Yeah, absolutely! I’ve spent most of the past six years in the States. and I miss Melbourne a lot.

“I miss the simplicity of where I grew up, small town, no traffic lights. things like that. I miss being able to wake up and go surfing. being a little bit more disconnected from the general world,” says the 24-year-old actor who was raised with his two older brothers, Chris and Luke, on Phillip Island.

He returns to the hugely popular Hunger Games franchise as Gale, potential beau of heroine Katniss. He saw very little action in the first two installments but now. in the third, audiences will finally get to see what all the fuss is about.

His blue eyes sparkle as he describes all his action scenes.

An abstract from Cineplex Magazine November 2014 article with Jennifer Lawrence

“ Even though we have a fourth Hunger Games movie to look forward to next November, filming has wrapped on the franchise. And both Jennifer Lawrence and her co-star Liam Hemsworth, who also spoke with Cineplex Magazine, recall a very special moment after their wrap party. “On the last night we all laid and held each other like puppies,” says Lawrence, the other puppies being Hemsworth, Woody Harrelson and Josh Hutcherson.
Hemsworth remembers the same moment. “We all just felt how strong the relationship was and how strong the bond was that we’d developed over the years,” he says. “We’ve shared so many pivotal points in our lives together. It’s really something that all of the people around us can’t relate to, it’s us looking out at it. It’s a very unique experience.”
