CASA DEL Mar, a former 1920s seaside pleasure palace, overlooks one of those LA views right off an Eagles album cover: Santa Monica palm trees and ferris wheel backlit against a punchy blue sky. Screams of gaiety ebb and flow above the idyllic hiss of the Pacific fizzing on to sand.

It’s another perfect day in California, and Hollywood Aussie boy made very, very good Liam Hemsworth strolls in. It would take a lot to distract anyone from the magnificent view flooding the penthouse suite. But he manages it.
“It’s pretty amazing, isn’t it?” he proffers, shaking my hand. Hemsworth has only had to come down the road from his Malibu perch, a hornet’s nest of paparazzi as the global media circus speculates whether his engagement to pop star Miley Cyrus is, indeed, back on.

I have been respectfully reminded by his publicist there is to be “No Miley” in our interview. No frigging way. “It’s the first thing I’ll ask,” I tell the French PR, giving her an early sampler of Aussie humour. Still, while Hemsworth might not want to talk about it, everyone else does.

It’s the double-fabulous rule, that couple narrative that taps powerfully into the celebrity-circus psyche — the onscreen romance (in 2009’s The Last Song), the rock on the finger in 2012 — with gossip-site interest reaching fever pitch when the pair broke up in 2013 (shortly after Cyrus took an axe to her Disney image with her infamous twerking at the MTV Music Awards).

When the pair ostensibly resumed their relationship in early 2016, with Cyrus in Byron Bay (where Liam’s brother Chris has relocated his family) over New Year’s and again in April, rumours of a re-engagement ricocheted around cyberspace.

Last Sunday Hemsworth posted a photo of himself and Cyrus with late boxing legend Muhammad Ali to Instagram, with the caption: “I’ll never forget the day we met the toughest man on the planet.” And the Aussie star conceded to Australian GQ last month, “People will figure it out, they already have. They’re not dumb.” No, just really, really into it.

So how does it feel being in the eye of the storm?
“I just want people to be respectful of my privacy,” he clarifies. “I don’t go out of my way to attract that kind of attention, or feel I owe anyone a show and tell. Some [other celebrities] don’t mind, but I like to keep my personal life apart and keep the noise at bay.”

What about when fame first hit?
