Plus, don’t expect a Game of Thrones-style resurrection for Steven Hiller.

Will Smith is sadly missing from Independence Day: Resurgence, but there’s a new charismatic hero taking the lead in the form of Liam Hemsworth.

However, Liam told Digital Spy that he’d rather no comparisons be made between him and the Suicide Squad star, who decided not to return for the blockbuster sequel.

He said: “I didn’t really think about that, to be honest. Will Smith’s Will Smith.

“He did a wonderful job in the first film and I didn’t want to recreate anything he did. I just wanted to focus on who this guy was as a character.”

But could Will return for any potential sequels? His character Steven Hiller may be dead, but as any Game of Thrones fan would tell you, if we don’t see them die on screen (and even if we do), anything could happen.

Sadly, director Roland Emmerich dismissed that silly notion, insisting: “No, he’s dead!

“It’s like this. I think the movie is introducing a new generation. That’s how it was meant to be, not that the old generation wouldn’t be part of it, but this was the idea.”

Jeff Goldblum, Bill Pullman and Maika Monroe also star in the follow-up to 1996’s Independence Day, which arrives in cinemas on Friday (June 24). Watch a trailer below:
